Montanans Rally to Defend Democracy
The Pledge to Protect Grows Statewide

IH presented “Signs of Fasciism” on Park Ave this past Saturday. The response was mostly positive.

The BIG ASK of Helena’s No Kings II rally-goers on Oct 18 was to sign the Pledge to Protect, the citizens’ petition supporting our Constitutional rights and key principles of democracy, and asking our two U.S. Senators, our two U.S. Representatives, and Governor Gianforte to also sign on to protect those rights and principles.
We have gathered over 5,000 signatures from around the state, but we’re aiming for 10,000.
The Petition to Protect will be presented to these elected officials on November 12 when Congress is in recess. This will be at a press event at which each elected official will have the opportunity to sign an extra-large version of the petition affirming they will protect these sacred rights and freedoms.
IH needs your help gathering signatures. Here are ways to get the petition to your friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors across Montana:
- Click here to access the Petition, or scan the QR code below. You can distribute it to your contacts via text, email, and social media, asking them to sign. And, you can ask that they also distribute it widely via text, email, and social media.
- Use traditional means to gather signatures on paper. Contact us by email, and IH will quickly provide you with a kit that has everything you need to collect signatures and get them to IH in time for the press event with our elected officials.

Be the Caring Community You Want to Live In
I often wonder what more I can do about our political and humanitarian struggles. I know I’m not alone. We all have urgent work to do, starting today and continuing every day for the foreseeable future.
In the absence of SNAP benefits to 77,000 Montanans, those of us with resources can leverage that privilege by supporting these organizations and efforts in Helena, which serve people who struggle with food security.
Helena Food Share is asking for cash donations and bulk foods such as cheese and eggs — items many SNAP recipients usually buy with their benefits before turning to food banks for nonperishables.
The YWCA and the women and children in their residential support program, need our financial help as well. The folks at the YWCA are asking for gift cards to Town and Country and WinCo. This support helps in a few ways. First, the women can maintain their agency over what they buy. Second, women without transportation can walk to Town and Country, and those with a car prefer to go to Winco. From the YWCA, “Gift cards can be dropped off at the YWCA Helena located at 501 N Park Ave, Monday-Friday from 9-4. Any and all denominations are appreciated during this difficult time. If you would like to help bridge the funding gap of the monthly cost for groceries, please consider a monetary donation.”
The YWCA asks that food donations be given directly to Helena Food Share.
And let’s not forget the Little Free Pantries at Pure View Health Center. The two pantries are always accepting nonperishable food and personal hygiene products. Drop off at Pure View, 1930 9th Ave, M–F 7am–5pm.
We can make a difference. Let’s be generous during this time of divisiveness and demonizing humans who are victims of a rigged system, and who are now at the mercy of the community. I’m all in.. you?

This Week’s To-Do List
Make Good Trouble in Helena!
1. Email Our GOP Senators
to Demand Full SNAP Funding and End of Shutdown
Bills sitting in Congress right now could stop healthcare costs from exploding and end this shutdown today — but Republicans won’t cross Trump to support them unless we really turn the pressure up. Demand GOP Senators work with Dems to guarantee they fully fund SNAP and put an end to the shutdown.

We Know What Trump Wants
How do we help those in power who want to destroy our government and our democracy?
“By acting as if the people will allow that. We will not.
We act that way when we’re afraid to click the wrong view, share it, or support it. We act like that when we behave as if they’d want us to by refusing to be visible in the streets, in the offices of our elected officials, and in any venue where we have the right to stand up for ourselves, our families, and our neighbors.”
