One Million Leaders Will Rise
Help Make It Happen in Helena

Indivisible Helena hosted a group viewing of the first of three live-streamed One Million Rising trainings last Wednesday evening at Lewis and Clark Library. Nationwide, more than 150,000 individuals registered for the training — the largest training of its kind in American history, according to the trainers — and here in Helena, 50 local Indivisibles attended in person, with others watching online via Zoom.
The trainers emphasized the seriousness of this moment and all at stake in our country. They outlined typical authoritarian tactics, provided an analysis of past non-violent civil resistance movements, and underscored the common elements of successful ones.
Finally, the trainers issued a call for participants to take action by hosting small Community Resistance Gatherings to discuss the importance of this critical time in our country’s history, with 10 or more friends, neighbors and family members. As a result of the first training, more than 6,000 people pledged to host Community Resistance Gatherings in an effort to build a movement of one million organizers committed to non-violent non-cooperation against the authoritarian Trump government.
The second training—How To Make It Happen—will tell you all you need to know about hosting your own Community Resistance Gathering. You can still get involved in this program on the ground floor. Watch the first one-hour training, required viewing if you want to participate in the program. Watch it to get caught up!
Indivisible Helena members will gather again at the Lewis and Clark Library for the second training session on Wednesday, July 30 at 6 pm (bring a friend and arrive early for a good seat). You can also register to participate from home via Zoom here.

Calling All Veterans
Unite to Defend Veterans and the Services You’ve Earned
Indivisible Helena veterans are looking for other area veterans to join them in forming a group of like-minded vets to band together and build an effective resistance to the Trump administration’s dismantling of the Veterans Administration.
If you are an area veteran and/or know of vets who are looking to have a voice in resisting the staffing and services cuts at the VA and the attacks on those who have served our country, please contact us at veteransindivisiblehelena@gmail.com.
Please include your contact info, including phone number. Let’s build another voice of protest and force for non-compliance in Helena.

Good Reads
One of the main pillars of legitimacy in a democratic society is the independent press, often called the Fourth Estate in America. Because the vast majority of media companies in this country are for-profit corporations, their mission often conflicts with their bottom line. And nowhere has this been more apparent that in the past six months of mainstream media’s coverage of Trump and his administration’s authoritarian breakthrough.
But some journalists are fighting back. Here is a story of one journalist who is fighting for freedom of the press — as he covered No Kings protests — as well as for his personal freedom from being deported because he was being a journalist while being brown.

A Good View
For those of you who want a better grounding in the One Million Rising campaign, last Thursday’s “What’s the Plan?” call featured Erica Chenoweth. She went into great detail about how to build a successful resistance movement that has 3.5% of the population actively organizing over time. Based on their research, resistance movements that attain that threshold almost always successfully resist an authoritarian takeover, i.e, they remain democratic, often becoming more so.
Here is the one-hour recording, especially useful for those local Indivisibles who want to participate in the campaign to build power. Referenced in the session is Dr. Gene Sharp’s 198 Methods of Nonviolent Action, a comprehensive list of our movement’s tactical options.
