“If this country has a future, it’s in the streets, the courts, the movements and the continued exercise of free speech and freedom of assembly against this administration.”

Ditch the Drama
Learn to Navigate the Holidays with Grace
The approaching end-of-year holidays, a time of renewing ties with family and friends, is also often a time of engaging (or not!) in those difficult conversations around politics, social issues, and whose sports team is best.
Are you looking for ways to honor and preserve the connections with these family members and friends? Would you like to make it even 10% easier to have these dinner-table convos?
Join us on Sunday, November 23, 12:30–2pm in the L & C Library Large Community Room to learn how to navigate these difficult conversations with respect and understanding. IH’s Barb Barnes and Anita Bangert bring a diverse toolkit for making gatherings more engaging — focusing on listening skills and thoughtful questioning to better understand the perspectives and concerns beneath people’s positions.
While it’s not absolutely necessary, you would do us a favor by sending an RSVP, so we can plan accordingly: abangert@bresnan.net. And bring a friend!

The Montana Plan to End Citizens United

In 1912, Montana’s Corrupt Practices Act — passed through a citizen initiative organized by the People’s Power League and supported by more than 76% of voters — limited the political influence of powerful mining interests known as the “Copper Collar.” That law stood for a century, until the Citizens United ruling in 2010 cleared the way for its overturn in 2012.
Vast increases in corporate and dark money in politics since Citizens United —including increasing amounts of out-of-state money — have led Montanans to question if our elected representatives are corrupted by unlimited big-money interests. Regular voters barely know their elected officials (who talk to donors much more than they talk to constituents) and don’t feel that their government responds to or serves anyone except our elected representatives’ biggest corporate patrons.
The Transparent Election Initiative is a constitutional ballot initiative — aka The Montana Plan — to end corporate and dark money in Montana politics.
The first-of-its-kind campain, now drawing national attention, aims to return control of elections to voters rather than corporate interests. By shutting off unlimited corporate and secret cash, and when passed by Montana voters in 2026, it would restore the relative weight of small-donor and individual speech — of regular voters — thus tightening the link between elected officials and the people in our democratic republic.
A free informational webinar will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, November 12, from 6–7:30 p.m., to introduce all Montanans to the nonpartisan initiative and the people-powered, grassroots campaign fighting for it. Volunteers begin gathering signatures in just a few weeks.
More information about The Montana Plan can be found at transparentelection.org, where you can also volunteer your time and/or money to help jump-start the campaign.

A year on from Trump’s victory, resistance is everywhere
“It has been striking that the most wealthy and theoretically most powerful have, in this crisis, often been the first to surrender. It’s non-elites who have stood on principle even when it means taking risks.”
