Hello Indivisibles!
Now that the Montana legislature is about to adjourn (and finally go home!), Indivisible Helena is developing a short-term strategy to turn up the heat on the national administration to keep their Hands Off! the progress that Americans have made over the past 250 years to form “a more perfect union.” We have all kinds of thoughts on how we would do that, but we know the best ideas come from the energy and talents of our members and supporters.
Toward that end, we want to know what issues and actions you think our organization should address next. Please take a few minutes to let us know by completing our first survey.

1. May Day is Not a Hallmark Holiday, It’s International Workers’ Day!
Our brothers and sisters at Waking Giant are organizing a May Day March to Defend Your Constitutional Rights, such as the right of free speech and assembly, both necessary for freedom of association, like in a labor union!
Assemble at Constitution Park (on Last Chance Gulch across from US Bank) at 2:00 pm on Thursday, May 1. To show your solidarity, bring a sign for the march on Last Chance Gulch.

2. Don’t Let the fascists disenfranchise America Voters: Contact Daines and Sheehy This Week!
The SAVE Act—the Safeguard or “Shitcan” American Voter Eligibility Act—has passed the US House of Representatives and sent to the Senate, where it will be voted on soon, now that Congress is back in session. This bill would require every voter to show proof of citizenship, like a passport or original birth certificate, when registering to vote or updating voter information.
Because the bill would require this proof in person, it would eliminate online and mail-in voter registration. This bill wouldn’t improve election security—it would make it significantly harder for many everyday Americans to vote. It is an attempt to eliminate the voting rights of qualified American voters.
It would disproportionately impact:
- Married women (about 84% of American women) who have changed their last names, many of whom don’t have birth certificates matching their legal name.
- Trans and nonbinary people who’ve changed their names to reflect their gender identity.
- Naturalized citizens could face additional barriers and intimidation.
- Military members, tribal citizens, and working-class Americans, who may not have easy access to these documents.

3. Tell Senators Daines, Sheehy, and Representative Downing you do NOT want to pay for the billionaires’ tax breaks!The Senate is set to ram through the Trump Tax Scam that sells out Americans to give the ultra-wealthy trillions of dollars in tax breaks, leaving the rest of us to foot the bill. They plan on slashing Medicaid, SNAP, Head Start, and much more.
Contact Daines, Sheehy, and Downing today to tell them you are horrified that they would withdraw medical care and take food from Montanans’ tables in order to give huge tax breaks to the billionaires. Stand up for everyday Americans, elected representatives! Or you’ll be looking for new jobs! Vote NO! On the Trump Tax Scam!

Another Great Read for the Week
This week’s article, Pressuring Republican Reps to Pressure Trump by Robert Kuttner of The American Prospect, fits right into this weeks’ action strategy. It tells the tale of how targeting a Republican representative in a swing district (in rural California) with massive public pressure, can force them to back away from the fascist agenda of the billionaire bullies, specifically the proposed cuts to Medicaid and Trump’s taxes (tariffs) on agricultural products. When Bernie and AOC brought out several thousand to their Fight Oligarchy rally, and Indivisible mobilized thousands more for their Hands Off! Rally, the ground was fertile for a campaign to challenge the Trump agenda. This district is now one of the 19 districts targeted to be flipped.
We don’t know where those other districts are, but it’s curious that Bernie and AOC were also in Missoula to wrap up that tour in front of 9,000 supporters. And many thousands more participated in the April 5th rallies up and down US93. But, as the article states, “Marches and demonstrations provide a sense of activity and solidarity, but by themselves they are not a strategy.” While Indivisible Helena is not in Zinke’s district, we should keep an eye open for strategic opportunities to help flip that seat. And put pressure on the entire delegation to stop looting the government in order to escape taxes.
